Recent Journal Article Reviews Curriculum Based Assessment
A recent peer reviewed journal article was published in the Autism Research and Treatment Journal. The researchers examined whether using a curriculum based assessment as a supplemental assessment alongside a standardized assessment was helpful in determining the benefits of early intervention programming for children with autism spectrum disorder. The tool used was an adapted Student Learning Profile from The STAR Program (Arick, Loos, Falco and Krug, 2004) in which a few items for students’ birth to 3 years of age were added from the parent training program Teaching Social Communication to Children with Autism (Ingersoll and Dvortcsak, 2010). It is exciting research as these are two curricula that are used in OrPATS classrooms across the state of Oregon! The research proposed that while standardized assessments are invaluable assessments, the use of a curriculum based assessment can help provide critical information to accurately measure a child’s abilities and a quick and effective tool to document the child’s progress.
